R. xanthostephanum

This lovely plant can be found native to Burma, Tibet, China and Vietnam.  It lives there in forests and pastures and on the sides of cliffs.

This one was grown here from seed in Western Washington.  Its bright yellow flowers and the silvery brown leaf underside distinguish it.  People enjoy its lovely red, peeling bark for its unusual qualities.

It’s a showy plant that can get sprawly, but you can train it and keep it manageable.  It’s a good candidate for a large pot, so you can bring it into the garage or greenhouse in the winter.

This rhododendron will like:  Sun or Shade - Small amounts of fertilizer on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day - Gentle Watering - Well aerated soil - Protection from the frost
