"Every plant has a story . . . ."

R. mallotum

You can't beat mallotum for its intensely wooly orange indumentum on the underside of the leaf!    But the dark rugose topside is equally spectacular.  In short, this is a very distinctive rhododendron whose scarlet flowers simply make it one of the most outstanding species rhododendron.

This one comes from the border area between Yunnan and Burma, where its forebears grow in the passes at about 11-12 thousand feet in bamboo thickets.

Mallotum will grow to about four feet in ten years.  Ours have lived happily in a woodland garden on the Olympic Peninsula for the last 25 years.

Mallotum will like: partial shade, gentle watering, well areated soil, excellent drainage and small amounts of fertilizer on Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

Tops of the leaves showing the rugose characteristic.

Heavy spongy orange indumentum on the bottom of the leaves.
