Garden writer Ciscoe Morris (Seattle Times, May 12, 2010): “If your yard can accommodate a big plant, Ciscoe suggests R. fulvum, R. rex, ssp. fictolacteum or R. sinogrande rhododendrons….”
His article continues:
“Rhododendron royalty”
“If you've got room, add a majestic
flair to your garden by planting one of the big species Rhododendrons.
“Species rhodies come in a wide
variety of growth habit, size and flower color, but the most magnificent ones
feature huge leaves, spectacular flowers and colorful indumentum (felt-like
covering under the leaf) that make them a year-round attraction.
“One of the showiest of the species
Rhododendrons is R. fulvum. Reaching 12 feet, the name fulvum means tawny and
the indumentum on the almost foot-long leaves is flaming orange. The flowers
are pink with a crimson throat.
“Another massive beauty is R. rex
ssp. fictolacteum. The footlong leaves are undercoated with rusty brown, and
the huge pure white, purple throated flower trusses can contain up to 30
individual flowers in a truss!
“If you've got room for a real
honker, R. sinogrande is your plant. Growing to more than 50 feet tall in its
native Tibet, this mammoth rhody features heavily textured dark-green leaves
that can reach 3 feet in length with undersides covered in beautiful
silver-gray indumentum. The flowers are huge and vary from creamy-white to
pale-yellow with red spotting. These big species rhodies sometimes show up at
local nurseries, or they're available on line at
www.chimacumwoods.com.”
Our Mission: to produce and provide quality species rhododendron plants
Chimacum Woods welcomes you to visit the nursery and gardens. We enjoy meeting with wholesale nursery buyers who are eager to offer beautiful, healthy and unusual plants to their customers. We like to talk about the value of helping preserve the gene pool of plants which are endangered because of slash-and-burn agriculture and road-building in their native lands. We like walking the garden to help landscape artists acquire mature plants for shows and gardens. Occasional visits from garden clubs and other interested groups give us a chance to show how species rhododendrons look "planted out" in a woodland setting.Come visit us. Please call 206-383-2713 or 609-506-5865 first to set up a convenient time. We are located between Port Ludlow and Shine, on a hill overlooking the Hood Canal, just a few miles south of the Hood Canal Bridge. Click on Location map for directions.
