This rhododendron's forebears are found in E. Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and N.E. India.  Flowers are large, with five lobes, it has a distinctive calyx and distinctive smooth reddish brown bark.  The plant is tender and needs protection in the Northwest.

A form of this species was used in a cross to produce the famous Loderi clones.  Flowers are among the largest in the genus.

This rhododendron will like:  Partial Shade - Small amounts of fertilizer on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day - Gentle Watering - Well aerated soil with good drainage - Protection from deep cold below 10 degrees
