"Every plant has a story . . . . "

R. degronianum ssp. heptamerum var. hondoense

To make matters worse, this plant has been known as R. metternichii for years!  Whatever the name, the plant is superb with soft felty new growth and stunning pink flowers.

Our plants are grown from seed we collected in Yoshino-Kamano National Park high in the mountains south of Kyoto.  It makes a compact shrub that may reach five feet in ten years and wants a mix of sun and shade.

This plant wants

 Gentle, even watering

 A loose, well-drained soil

Small amounts of fertilizer on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day

A mix of sun and shade

It is completely hardy in Western Washington.  The mountains of Japan are COLD.

A unique feature of var. hondoense is the plastered pale indumentum which is highlighted by the red midrib.

This form has beautiful pink flowers.  Flowers have seven lobes.  Photo by Bob.
