R. keysii

R. keysii can be found growing in Bhutan, W. Arunachal Pradesh and S. Tibet from 8,000 to 12,000 ft.  Usually bi-colored in shades of orange to red with yellow flower tips. Often forms thick clusters as above.  Flowers are both terminal and axial in the top two to four leaves.

Shrub is upright and sometimes somewhat leggy.  Leaves are not glaucous above but are densly scaly below.  The flowers of this species are unlike any other in the genus.  Perfectly hardy in the northwest.

This rhododendron will like:  Partial Shade - Small amounts of fertilizer on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day - Gentle Watering - Well aerated soil.
